Guzman, Senney headed to regionals

For two members of the Del Rio High School powerlifting team, the season is far from over.
Senior Joey Guzman and junior D.W. Senney will travel to Weslaco this weekend to compete in the Region V Powerlifting Meet with a berth in the state meet on the line.
The duo qualified for the meet by placing among the top three in their respective weight classes at the recent Yorktown meet.
Guzman, competing in the 275-pound weight class, was third in the division with a total weight lifted of 1,410 pounds. He squatted 545 pounds, bench-pressed 350 pounds and deadlifted 515 pounds.
Senney competed in the superheavyweight division that features athletes who weight more than 275 pounds. Senney took second at the meet with a total weight lifted of 1,310 pounds, missing out on first place by 25 pounds. He squatted 555 pounds, bench-pressed 330 pounds and deadlifted 425 pounds.
The Yorktown meet capped off a short season for the team as they competed in a total of five meets before the regional meet.
Del Rio had several athletes place in the top 10 at the Somerset meet held on Feb. 6.
Freddy Falcon was fifth in the 132-pound division with a total weight lifted of 630 pounds. He squatted 210 pounds, bench-pressed 120 pounds and deadlifted 300 pounds.
In the 148-pound weight class, Josh Hardin took eighth while Adam Austin finished 17th.
Hardin lifted a total of 930 pounds. He had a 330-pound squat, a 255-pound bench press and a 345-pound deadlift. Austin lifted a total of 680 pounds including a 260-pound squat, a 160-pound bench press and a 260-pound deadlift.
In the 165-pound weight class, Brian Staffen took seventh, Josh Hughes was 10th and Anthony Medellin was 13th.
Staffen had a total weight of 920 pounds. He had a 340-pound squat, a 215-pound bench press and a 365-pound deadlift.
Hughes finished with 845 pounds lifted. He had a 295-pound squat, a 201-pound bench press and a 340-pound deadlift.
Medellin lifted a total of 705 pounds. That total included a 305-pound squat, a 185-pound bench press and a 215-pound deadlift.
Johnny Sanders was seventh in the 220-pound weight class. His total weight was 1,180 pounds as he squatted 480 pounds, bench pressed 285 pounds and deadlifted 415 pounds.
Dominic Wilhelm was sixth in the 242-pound weight class with a total of 1,190 pounds. He had a 455-pound squat, a 295-pound bench press and a 440-pound deadlift.
In the 275-pound weight class, Guzman took third while teammate Gus Zavala was seventh.
Guzman had a total of 1,365 pounds. He had a 525-pound squat, a 330-pound bench press and a 510-pound deadlift.
Zavala finished with a total of 1,215 pounds. His total included a 490-pound squat, a 300-pound bench press and a 425-pound deadlift.
The superheavyweight division saw Senney finish fifth while Jesse Adams took seventh.
Senney lifted 1,200 pounds including a 465-pound squat, a 310-pound bench press and a 425-pound deadlift.
Adams finished with 1,105 pounds. He had a 390-pound squat, a 310-pound bench press and a 405-pound deadlift.
At the Medina Valley meet, held in Castroville on Feb. 20, Del Rio finished 10th as a team.
Falcon was seventh in the 132-pound weight class with 645 pounds. He had a 200-pound squat, a 145-pound bench press and a 300-pound deadlift.
In the 148-pound weight class, Hardin was fifth while Austin finished 14th.
Hardin lifted 945 pounds, including a 340-pound squat, a 265-pound bench press and a 340-pound deadlift. Austin finished with a total of 800 pounds including a 295-pound squat, a 190-pound bench press and a 315-pound deadlift.
In the 165-pound weight class, Medellin was eighth followed by Hughes in ninth and Jaime Gutierrez in 11th.
Medellin had 865 pounds including a 325-pound squat, a 205-pound bench press and a 335-pound deadlift. Hughes cleared 845 pounds including a 265-pound squat, a 235-pound bench press and a 345-pound deadlift. Gutierrez had a total of 820 pounds including a 280-pound squat, a 260-pound bench press and a 280-poiund deadlift.
In the 181-pound division, Talor Benson was seventh and Staffen was 13th.
Benson lifted a total of 1,020 pounds including a 400-pound squat, a 225-pound bench press and a 395-pound deadlift. Staffen hit 920 pounds with a 330-pound squat, a 215-pound bench press and a 375-pound deadlift.
Rene Marin was fourth in the 242-pound weight class with a total weight lifted of 1,145 pounds. He had a 445-pound squat, a 300-pound bench press and a 400-pound deadlift.
In the 275-pound weight class, Guzman was second followed by Zavala in third.
Guzman had a total weight of 1,405 pounds including a 530-pound squat, a 345-pound bench press and a 530-pound deadlift. Zavala finished with 1,225 pounds after a 460-pound squat, a 325-pound bench press and a 440-pound deadlift.
Senney was sixth in the superheavyweight division with a total weight of 1,255 pounds. He had a 500-pound squat, a 330-pound bench press and a 425-pound deadlift.
“Our boys and girls teams both performed exceptionally well this season and we’re setting our goals even higher for next season,” powerlifting head coach Candelario Rivera said.
