Drink up – Tests show water is safe
Published July 31, 2009
The city’s water supply is free of bacteria, a city official said Thursday.
The announcement was made around 4 p.m. after the city received the results from 40 water samples sent to a testing agency in Universal City outside San Antonio.
The samples, which were collected from areas around the city following a breach in the water system, were sent for testing Wednesday afternoon.
Mitch Lomas, a city water official, said Wednesday that the samples had to incubate for 30 hours to allow any bacteria in them to grow.
Sometime during the night between Tuesday and Wednesday one of the city’s water mains located near U.S. Highway 90 and San Felipe Creek ruptured, resulting is a loss of more than five million gallons of water.
Officials said a 12-inch main was discovered around 9:30 Wednesday morning to have a 10-foot crack in it.
By 1:30 p.m. Wednesday the main had been fixed, but the crack and resulting loss in water pressure caused concern that bacteria could infiltrate the water system.
Because of that concern, city officials issued public notices asking residents to boil water for at least two minutes prior to consumption.
Around 4 p.m. Thursday the city issued media releases stating that precaution was being lifted.
The city has also lifted its request for residents to conserve water to give its storage tanks a chance to refill.
Jackie Robinson, a spokeswoman for the city, said this morning the water tanks have reached capacity.

Also, citizens are encouraged to sign up for the city’s Code Red system at its Web site. By providing the city with a telephone number, citizens can be reached automatically during emergent situations via voice recorded messages.
