No spring break for local sports
Published March 13, 2007
Spring Break doesn’t mean time off for Del Rio’s student athletes.
Despite the week off from classes, Del Rio High School’s boys and girls athletic teams have been busy with a full slate of games. By the end of the week, most teams will have played three games between their home fields and San Antonio.
BASEBALL
The Rams varsity baseball team suffered its first District 28-5A loss of the season Friday when they dropped a 6-1 decision to the Warren Warriors in San Antonio.
Del Rio led 1-0 after three innings, but Warren rallied to put four runs up in the fourth and one run in both the fifth and sixth innings to take the contest.
Warren out-hit Del Rio, 6 to 4, and took advantage of three Rams errors.
Del Rio’s struggles from the plate were evident as Warren’s starting pitcher Adrian Tarango baffled the Rams with a devastating offspeed pitch. By the time the game ended, he had struck out 13 Rams.
Robby Lopez took the loss for the Rams who fall to 2-1 in district and 7-4 on the season.
The Rams return to action Wednesday as they host the Taft Raiders at Roosevelt Park at 2:45 p.m. Taft enters the game 0-4 in district and 5-9-1 on the season.
SOCCER
The Queens varsity soccer team saw its playoff chances take a hit this weekend as it fell to Taft, 3-1.
According to Queens Head Coach Ernesto Martinez, the Queens put the pressure on Taft early on but was never able to hit the back of the goal.
“The game started out as expected. Both teams knew what was as stake, so during the first half the Queens and Lady Raiders went back and forth. Del Rio pressured the Taft defense again and again but couldn’t score. Cindy Ramirez had the first opportunity on a cross from Lori Gomez but kicked the ball to the Taft goalkeeper. Still in the first half, the Queens continued to cross the ball beautifully but only to have no back door and lost scoring opportunities,” Martinez said.
After a scoreless first half, Taft came out strong in the second half. With just under 39 minutes remaining in the game, Taft picked up its first goal when Jordan Franco took advantage of Gabri Guerra’s clearing attempt and scored to put the Lady Raiders up 1-0.
Five minutes later, Taft’s Cristina Mercedes outjumped the Queens ‘ defenders in front of the goal and put home a Taft corner kick to give her squad a 2-0 lead.
Goal number three came about three minutes later as Mercedes scored her second goal of the day through a packed penalty box.
Despite being down by three, the Queens never gave up.
“Lori Gomez, Cindy Perez, Cindy Ramirez, Gabby Briones, Yahaira Rodriguez Becky Silva, Crystal Hernandez, Ana Oviedo and Karina Cienega continued to attack and put pressure on Taft. Sabrina Bailey replaced Brooke Powell in the box and various substitutions continued to take place,” Martinez said.
With 11:23, Del Rio scored its only goal of the contest as Blanca Suarez dropped a strong pass to Perez who dribbled past a pair of Taft defenders and through the Taft goalie before putting the ball in the back of the net.
“The girls played with a ‘Never give up’ attitude until the buzzer sounded. We are extremely proud of this young team. We look forward to finishing strong against Jay, Clark, Holmes and Stevens,” Martinez said.
The loss moved the Queens to 4-7-1 in District 28-5A and 5-9-1 on the season.
The Queens hosted the John Jay Lady Mustangs Monday at Walter Levermann Ram Stadium, but results were unavailable as of press time.
Del Rio’s next game will be Wednesday at Farris Stadium in San Antonio against the Clark Cougars at 3 p.m.
The Queens final home game will be Friday at 1 p.m. against the Holmes Lady Huskies.
The Rams’ once fading playoff hopes were given new light as Del Rio knocked off a pair of district opponents within a span of five days.
The first victim were the Taft Raiders who missed out on a chance to clinch the District 28-5A title when they were defeated 2-1 by Del Rio on Saturday.
Miguel Zuniga and Horacio Salazar scored goals for the Rams as Del Rio took a 2-0 lead early on the Raiders.
Chris Gonzalez added a goal for Taft late, but the Rams were able to hold on for the win.
Then on Monday, Del Rio crushed Jay 6-1 to move to 5-6-2 in district play and 9-7-2 on the year.
Salazar scored three goals, Noe Tellez had a pair and Raul Lopez scored one goal to spearhead the attack.
“We were short-handed again with several of our starters out. I used sophomores and freshmen and they got the job done,” Interim Head Coach Ralph Castorena said. “This team is playing much different. They don’t have the distractions they did earlier this season. You can tell the difference.”
To have a chance to at the playoffs the Rams will have to win out. That includes Wednesday at Clark at Farris Stadium in San Antonio at 1 p.m., here on Friday against Holmes at 3 p.m. and March 20 at Gustafson Stadium at 7 p.m. against Stevens.
SOFTBALL
The Queens varsity softball team took five games to score its first runs in district this season, then they went and topped off that achievement with a win.
Del Rio had been held scoreless in its first four District 28-5A games of the season. The most recent shutout was a 5-0 loss to Taft on Friday in San Antonio.
But Monday, the Queens finally broke through, scoring eight runs against John Jay and taking the contest by a count of 8-4.
“We played very well today. It was a good win. We hope to win two more this week and end the first half of the district schedule 4-4. That’s our plan,” Head Coach Renae Littrell said.
The Queens welcome Clark to town Wednesday for a noon match-up at the Queens Softball Field. Then on Friday, the Queens travel to San Antonio to take on the Holmes Lady Huskies at noon.
