Celebrating Del Rio’s athletes
Published May 12, 2006
Another school year of athletics has come and gone.
Although Del Rio High School’s foray into athletics this year won’t be complete until junior Guy Goodspeed Jr. complete his round today at the State 5A Golf Tournament in Austin, athletes in the school’s other sports were lauded for their achievements during the year at the All-Sports Picnic Thursday at the Carl P. Guys Memorial Gymnasium.
Each sport, with the exception of football (which holds its own awards ceremony earlier in the year), recognized its top athlete Thursday. Many of those same athletes also received scholarships from the various booster clubs that support the high school’s athletic program.
An added award this year was presented to the seniors from each athletic team. Each senior received a miniature ram head and a certificate listing their achievements during their years in those sports.
San Felipe Del Rio Consolidated Independent School District Athletic Director said the senior awards would become a staple of the picnic in years to come.
Top honors for the evening went to seniors Jacob Washington and Fernanda Esquivel.
Washington was named Male Athlete of the Year for his success in football, basketball and track. Washington was named to the District 27-5A First Team All-District team in football as a wide receiver, was a Second Team All-District selection in basketball and was a regional qualifier in the 110-meter high hurdles, in which he was also district champ, and the long jump.
Washington also took home awards for Jumper of the Year and Varsity Male Track and Field Athlete of the Year in track and was Defensive MVP in boys basketball.
Esquivel took home Female Athlete of the Year for her achievements in cross-country, basketball and track. Esquivel was the top finisher for the Queens cross country team at the District 27-5A meet, finishing 11th and was named Female Cross-Country Runner of the Year; was named the Offensive Player of the Year for the Queens Basketball team after leading the team in 3-point field goal percentage, attempts and attempts made; and was a regional qualifier in the 800-meter run, earning her the award for Female Track Athlete of the Year.
