Published November 1, 2009

The district’s varsity cross-country championships will stay in Del Rio another year.

Del Rio High School’s varsity boys and girls programs successfully defended their District 29-5A cross-country titles Saturday morning at the district’s cross-country meet at the Del Rio Middle School campus.

The win gives the boys’ team its eighth consecutive district championship while it’s the third straight title for the girls’ team.

Not to be outdone, Del Rio’s junior varsity boys and girls teams also won the district titles in their division as well.

The top three teams from each varsity division, as well as the top 10 individual runners from each varsity division, will next compete at the Region IV Cross-Country Meet Nov. 7 at Brooks City Air Force Base in San Antonio.

For Del Rio’s boys, the eighth title proved to be one of the toughest as only two of the team’s runners finished among the top 10 overall. Eagle Pass High, Laredo Alexander and Laredo United also each placed two runners among the top 10 finishers, but none of Del Rio’s runners finished worse than 23rd overall to help their team retain the district crown.
