Staff Sgt. Jose Lanzarin dies in Iraq

Antonio Lanzarin of Del Rio received word Sept. 27, 2006 that his son had died in Iraq on Sept. 26 while in the service of his country.
Personnel from the local U.S. Army recruiting offices delivered the news to Antonio Lanzarin at 514 Avenue U, where he resides with his mother, Socorro Lanzarin.
Staff Sgt. Jose Antonio Lanzarin, serving with the U.S. Army, was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment, 1st Armored Division, deployed from Baumholder, Germany.
He was killed in Ramadi, Iraq on Tuesday when a roadside bomb detonated near his vehicle during combat, officials of the Department of Defense said.
Jose Lanzarin was born in Del Rio on Oct. 25, 1977 to Antonio Lanzarin and Sylvia Maltos Lanzarin. He later moved to Lubbock where he graduated from high school. Upon graduation, he joined the Army in 1997.
He met his wife, Sandra, in Germany.
He was about to complete nine years of service.
This was his third enlistment to Iraq, according to his paternal aunt, Vicenta Richter of Del Rio.
Sgt. Lanzarin is survived by his wife; parents; grandmother Socorro Lanzarin of Del Rio; grandparents Amelia Maltos and Jesus Maltos of Fort Worth; siblings: Mayra, Jorge, Iris and Verenice; aunts: Vicenta Richter, Sylvia Magaña and Juana Lanzarin of Del Rio; Bertha Ledesma of Houston and Patricia Simabuco of Cd. Acuña, Coah., Mexicio.
Funeral and burial arrangements are pending in Fort Worth. His Del Rio relatives were preparing to leave Tuesday afternoon.
A cousin, Jose A. Richter, 25, currently serving in Afghanistan, has been given special permission to travel home to participate in the funeral services. Another cousin, Herman Richter, a U.S. Navy veteran, will also be a member of the funeral cortege.
