The Queens varsity soccer team snapped its four-game losing streak with a 2-1 win over Taft Saturday in San Antonio.

The Lady Raiders struck first blood, scoring 57 seconds into the game. But it would be the last time Taft’s players would find the back of the Del Rio net.

Down 1-0 at halftime, Del Rio bounced back and tied the game up on a goal by Brianda Ojeda.

Rachel Alsing took a direct shot on goal. The ball, which came off her foot like a shot, smacked into the Taft goalie and bounced in front of the net. Ojeda, playing forward, moved in and tapped the ball into the net to know things up at 1-1.

The Queens took the lead for good 15 minutes into the second half when Ojeda centered the ball from the left side to the middle of the field, and teammate Cindy Perez finished the play off with a shot into the Taft goal.

After that, it was all defense.

“We kept them scoreless thereafter. We kept the ball away from their offense. Our girls really played their hearts out today. The girls didn’t give up after being down in the first minute,” said Head Coach Ernesto Martinez.

After allowing the initial goal, Del Rio goalie Brooke Powell turned back the next 18 shots she faced.

“We played tough defense that last 25 minutes of the second half. We shut them out for 79 total minutes,” said Martinez. “Like I said after Wednesday’s game, getting to play all those high caliber teams, like Clark, Warren and O’Connor, has overall made us a better team.”

The win moves the Queens to 3-4 in District 27-5A and 8-9 on the season.

The Queens’ next game will be Tuesday against the John Jay Lady Mustangs at 4 p.m. at Walter Levermann Ram Stadium.
