Rams stumble against Eagles

Published April 10, 2009

It was an ugly night for Del Rio’s pitching staff.

The Rams used six different pitchers, who wound up surrendering 13 hits and hitting five batters, en route to a 13-3 loss to the Eagle Pass High Eagles Thursday night at Roosevelt Park.

The loss drops the Rams to 6-13 on the season and 4-5 in District 29-5A.

Everything was going right for Del Rio in the first inning.

Starting pitcher Danny Patiño retired the first two batters before walking Jonathan LaFrenz. After LaFrenz was lifted for a courtesy runner, Patiño ran designated hitter Gabriel Lopez to a full count before Eagle Pass’ runner inexplicably took off from first after ball three. Del Rio catcher David Gomez fired the ball to second baseman Adrian Guajardo who tagged the confused runner for the third out.

The Rams then took the lead in the bottom of the inning.

Humberto Barrera led off with a double down the right field line. Josue Aldrete then laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Barrera to third. Eagle Pass third baseman Jose Chio fielded the ball cleanly, but his throw went wide of first base. Barrera scored and Aldrete raced all the way to third.

After Jack Mayfield walked, and Tino Pruneda struck out, Diego Cadena reached on a fielder’s choice to load the bases. Emitt Crisp then hit a chopper to third that Chio used to throw Crisp out, but Aldrete scored to make the score 2-0 in favor of the Rams.

David Gomez walked to load the bases again, but the Rams missed a chance to add more runs to their lead when Patiño’s ground ball up the middle was snared by a diving Eric Valdez who flipped the ball to Hector Tamez to force Gomez at second for the third out.

Patiño ran into trouble on the mound in the second when he walked the leadoff batter and then hit Mario Herrera. That brought out head coach Gene Flores who replaced Patiño with Carson Hill. Hill then retired the next three Eagle Pass hitters to end the Eagles’ at-bat.

After the Rams were set down in order in the bottom of the second, Eagle Pass cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the third as Valdez crushed a Hill pitch over the right centerfield wall.

Again Del Rio was retired in order in the bottom of the third, but the Rams’ pitching kept Del Rio out in front in the fourth.

Herrera led off the fourth with an infield single and then Hill hit Mauro Reyes. But the Eagles couldn’t turn the baserunners into runs as Hill retired the next three batters to keep the Rams up 2-1.

Del Rio was able to put a runner on base in the bottom of the fourth as Gomez walked and was replaced by courtesy runner Richard Hernandez. But Hernandez’s stay at first was short lived as he was picked off by a quick throw from catcher LaFrenz.

Eagle Pass took the lead in the top of the fifth as the Eagles exploded for six runs in the inning behind five hits, one hit batter and a Del Rio throwing error. The big blow of the at-bat was a Tamez double with the bases loaded that plated three runs.

Hill didn’t make it out of the fifth. He was replaced by Adrian Vasquez after giving up back-to-back singles and then throwing a LaFrenz grounder into centerfield as he tried to start a double play.

Del Rio tried to answer in the bottom of the inning as Guajardo led off with a double off the centerfield wall. But the next two batters were retired before Mayfield walked. The threat then ended when Eagle Pass pitcher Xavier Cano struck out Guillermo Sanchez to end the fifth.

Eagle Pass pushed its lead to 8-2 in the sixth as Gabriel Lopez smacked an RBI single.

Again the Rams tried to rally in the bottom of the inning as Cadena led off with a double to right field. After Crisp flied out, Gomez hit a ground ball to Valdez at shortstop. Valdez turned and threw to Chio who tagged Cadena trying to advance to third. After Vasquez was hit by a pitch, Guajardo flew out to end the inning.

The Eagles picked up five more runs in the top of the seventh to increase their lead to 13-2. Eagle Pass had three hits in the inning, but they also benefited from new pitcher Aldrete hitting two of the four batters he faced.

Aldrete was replaced by Robert Villarreal, who walked in a run, gave up an RBI groundout, an RBI double and an RBI single before being replaced by Hernandez. Hernandez ended the at-bat by getting Herrera to fly out to Mayfield.

Del Rio added its final run in the bottom of the seventh.

Elias Cruz led off with a walk. After Chris Gutierrez struck out, Mayfield reached on an infield single. Cory James then came up to bat and watched as a pitch bounced in the dirt and stopped just behind his feet. Cruz and Mayfield bolted as Eagle Pass searched for the ball, but when the Eagles quickly found it Cruz doubled back toward second and an oncoming Mayfield.

Mayfield got himself caught in a rundown and evaded the tag long enough to allow Cruz to score before he himself was finally tagged out. James then struck out to end the game.

Del Rio’s next game will be Tuesday as the Rams host the Laredo United Longhorns at Roosevelt Park at 6 p.m.
