Bullriding brings thrills to Del Rio

Published May 6, 2007

The Oscar de la Hoya vs. Mayweather match wasn’t the only thing throwing big blows Saturday as 45 daring bull riders hopped upon 45 of the fiercest, meanest bulls in the industry for the 30th Annual George Paul Memorial Bull Riding event.

Cowboys vied for the prized George Paul Memorial belt buckle in the first half of the event Saturday. Out of more than 55 rides, only 17 riders twisted their bull to the full eight-second count.

The top 10 riders, after both the long go and short go, were Marcus Lariluch, Elko, NV, riding Bad Company’s YMCA, 86 points and 84 points on the short go riding the Davis-Wilson bull Cool Kat for a 170 point total; J. B. Mauney, Mooresville, NC, riding Bad Company’s Louie Louie, 81 points and 87 points on the short go riding the Davis-Wilson bull Georgia’s Pride for a 168 point total; Zachary Brown, Santa Fe, N.M., riding Davis-Wilson’s Hypnotic, 87 points; Jesse James Kirby, Ashland, KS, riding Bad Company’s Funky Cole Medina, 85.5; Trent Amedee, St. Amant, LA, riding Bad Company’s Pretty Vegas, 85.5 points; Max Fortmuller, Portales, N.M., riding Davis-Wilson’s Cheeseburger Island Style, 83.5 points; Sterling Yancey, Bulverde, TX, riding Bad Company’s Satan’s Own, 83 points; Jake Mann, Uvalde, TX, riding Bad Company’s Hella Good, 82.5 points; Ryan Bitsui, Ganado, AZ, riding David Bailey’s Ghost Buster, 82 points; and Jay Pahlke, Bismarck, N.D., riding David Bailey’s Wild Cherry, 80.5 points.

These 10 riders will advance their scores into the second day’s event, scheduled to begin today at 3 pm at the Val Verde County Fairgrounds, to see if they can be topped by another set of bull riders out for the buckle and the $1 million purse at the end of the PBR season.

The night wasn’t all about bull riding as the clown troop, headed by Mark Swingler, entertained the crowds throughout the event in a rampant police car, miniature dirt bikes, even creating a buzz as he gathered members of the crowd to strip and dance or just joke around.

Amid all the hubbub and commotion, there was a somber moment in memory of J. G. Crouch, a long-time member of the George Paul Memorial Bull Riding Family who passed away last year from an ongoing cancer battle.

The Go Western Spirit award was also handed out. Of all the companies registered with the rodeo, those who dressed their faculty in western wear were judged on originality and the like, with the winner being given a plaque commemorating their victory. This year, in third place was the Del Rio National Bank, in second was Southwest Abstract, and taking first was Ram Country Dodge.

Be sure not to miss out on today’s bull riding for a chance to see some of the best bucking bulls in the business and to find out who will win the George Paul Memorial buckle.
