Women's Day Conference
Published March 27, 2008
“Empowering Women” is the theme of the 22nd International Women’s Day Conference, which begins Friday at the Casa De La Cultura.
This year’s conference will start with a march from the Casa Annex, 716 W. Garza St., to the Casa’s main building, located at 302 Cantu St. on the south side’s historic Brown Plaza.
Anyone who wants to march is asked to meet at the Casa Annex at 5 p.m. Friday. The march will begin at 5:30 p.m. Friday.
The march will end at the Casa’s main building and will be followed by the unveiling of the “Celebration” mural.
Saturday’s schedule of events begins with registration at 8:30 a.m. at the Casa’s main building and continues with a welcome at 9 a.m.
At 10 a.m., there will be an address from this year’s keynote speaker, Maria A. Ibarra.
Casa De La Cultura Executive Director Lupita De La Paz described Ibarra as “a mother, director, writer, actor and teaching artist.”
Ibarra holds a bachelor of arts degree in theater and speech and believes in the power of “education through the arts,” De La Paz noted.
De La Paz said Ibarra currently serves as a theater arts artist-in-residence for the San Antonio Independent School District and works with young people through the “Jump-Start Performance Company’s Word Play and Healing Arts” programs.
De La Paz said Ibarra most recently directed “An Altar for Emma,” a play by Beverly Sanchez Padilla about the life of Emma Tenayuca at the Esperanza Peace and Justice Center, the Guadalupe Plaza and Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio.
Among her other works as a director are “Emapanada,” a play for the Sor Juana Festival at the Mexican Museum of Fine Arts in Chicago and at M.E.C.C.A. in Houston about a lesbian chicana that centers on the themes of family, food, religion and sexuality.
De La Paz said Ibarra also directed “What are you Doing Tonight?”, a play about relationships for Galeria de la Raza at SOMA Arts in San Francisco, MACLA in San Jose and at Teatro Campesino in San Juan Bautista, Calif.
De La Paz said Ibarra’s next effort will be a performance in “Mi Bandera es La Tierra,” an original performance piece, at this year’s Sor Juana Festival at Teatro Bilingue in Houston.
At 11 a.m., there will be special presentations on technology, history, tradition and health, as well as “Kickboxing 101,” which will deal with youth issues.
The 22nd International Women’s Day Conference is open to the public.
