Armed robbery at motel

Published November 26, 2005

A Ft. Worth man staying at The Ramada Inn of Del Rio was robbed at gunpoint in one of the motel’s parking lots Friday night.

Minutes after the crime occurred, David Villavicencio of Ft. Worth told the Del Rio News-Herald and Del Rio Police Department officers he was held up in a parking lot on the east end of the motel, located at 2101 Veterans Blvd., about 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Villavicencio said he currently lives in Ft. Worth, but was born in Ciudad Acuña, Coah., Mexico and is in the area visiting family members who still live in the Mexican border city.

“We know in Mexico, we have to be real careful; that’s why we decided to stay here, on the U.S. side,” said Villavicencio’s girlfriend, Anita Franco.

Villavicencio said he had gone to the parking lot to retrieve his swimming trunks from the utility box of his maroon Toyota Tundra pickup, which was parked there.

As he was standing in the bed of the pickup, Villavicencio said he was approached by a young man he described as being “14 or 15 years old, maybe 16” and Anglo.

“And this guy pulls a gun on me,” said Villavicencio.

He said the teenager held the gun, which Villavicencio could only describe as a revolver, at waist level and demanded Villavicencio’s wallet.

Villavicencio said at first he told the young man he didn’t have a wallet.

“But then he said, ‘I can see that you have one,’” Villavicencio recalled.

Villavicencio said he eventually handed the young man all the money he had — $40 in two $20 bills – and kept his wallet.

Villavicencio said the young robber had been wearing a white t-shirt, blue jeans, thin-soled tennis shoes and a baseball cap.

Villavicencio’s narrative was interrupted as DRPD Officer Gabriel Soriano drove up and asked Villavicencio to get into the car so he could be taken to the Whataburger restaurant, located in the next block north of the motel, for the identification of a possible suspect in the robbery.

While he was gone, Franco, who is also of Ft. Worth, continued talking with this reporter.

Franco did not witness the robbery.

Franco said she and Villavicencio and several of the children with them – some hers, some Villavicencio’s – wanted to go swimming in the motel pool, and that she, Villavicencio and the children had gone to Lake Amistad earlier in the day, where Villavicencio had gotten his swim trunks wet.

Villavicencio returned after a few minutes – the man at the Whataburger wasn’t the person they were all looking for.

DRPD Sgt. Steve Berg said at 9:20 p.m. Friday, no suspect in the robbery had been detained.
