Woman’s Conference continues
Published March 20, 2010
Local men and women of all ages took to the street Friday evening for the 24th International Woman’s Day conference march.
Supporters met at the Casa de la Cultura Annex and marched down Garza Street to spread their message. Alexandria Reyes, Andrea Friday, Mia Cruz, and Samantha Lopez carried the cause’s banner.
Organizer for the event, Diana Abrego, led the group to Brown Plaza for a time to reflect, honor, and renew.
Each Spring after the march the group takes part in planting seeds in honor of the season’s renewing promise. Members planted a pepper tree, and other seeds, including sunflowers in the Casa de la Cultura garden.
The group members also took time to remember influential women who have gone before.
Abrego explained the main goal of the march, “celebrating women’s work, we all have something to offer in any way, in all types of work…mothers, doctors, lawyers, journalists, we are always doing our work.”
She said she believes women have a great impact on our future generations, “…through planting and nurturing our youth, our children, raising good sons and daughters, letting them know they are loved. If you have love in your heart, and your feet are planted firmly on the ground, you can do anything.”
The conference, titled “Celebrating Women’s Work”, with special keynote speaker co-director Petra Mata from Fuerza Unida, San Antonio, will be held today.
