Brackett Tigers start playoffs with win

Published November 19, 2005

SAN ANTONIO — During the course of the evening, the P.A. announcer at Alamo Heights Stadium continually announced other Class 1A playoff scores. Most were less than 10 points.

This was not the case for the Brackett Tigers, who scored three times in the first period to take a 21-0 lead en route to a 67-7 thrashing of the Falls City Beavers.

The Tigers’ domination of Class 1A opponents in South Texas continues.

On the opening kickoff, Falls City ran a reverse handoff and got the ball to the Brackettville 40-yard line.

However, the Tigers’ defense would have no part of any further progression. Gumaro Martinez and Leon Woolsey each had a pair of big plays on the Falls City possession.

Taking over on their own 36-yard line, it took just six plays for the Tigers to get on the scoreboard as Ivan Pinales went 35 yards for the game’s first score. Jacob Schroeder converted the extra point for a 7-0 Brackett lead.

It was the first of four touchdowns on the evening for Pinales.

Brackettville’s next possession saw Brand Wylie scamper 11 yards for his first of two scores. Schroeder was perfect again to make it 14-0 with less than nine minutes gone in the game.

Falls City fumbled on its next possession. Martin Flores recovered for the Tigers.

Pinales went 11 yards around the right side to make it 21-0, which would stand at the end of the corner.

Travis Bonner also had a fumble recovery in the first period.

On the first play of the second quarter, Pinales went 13 yards around the left side and Schroeder’s kick failed, leaving the score at 27-0.

Falls City had yet to pick up a first down.

Wylie scored on a 40-yard run in the second period as Brackett ran the score to 34-0.

The senior defensive back/running back then intercepted a Beaver pass and returned it 42 yards to the Falls City 13-yard line. From there, Miles Bracsicke went 13 yards as the score went to 40-0.

On the ensuing kickoff, Pinales picked up a muffed reception and went 15 yards to make it 47-0.

Quarterback Robert Davis had the final score of the first half as he went one yard with time running out to boost the score to 54-0.

In the third period, Pinales struck again from 10 yards out and Schroeder made it 61-0.

With 6:21 remaining in the third period, Falls City finally picked up their first first down of the game. However, they proceeded to fumble the ball away and Martinez recovered for Brackett.

Brackettville’s first, and only punt, came on the next possession.

Later in the game, Ricky Ortega read a Beavers’ screen perfectly, picking off the pass, and running it in from 20 yards out as the score went to 67-0.

The Beavers finally got on the scoreboard as Corey Stone scored from three yards out.

From there, the Tigers ran out the clock for the 67-7 win.

The game was totally dominated by Brackett’s ground game, led by Pinales, Bracsicke, Wylie and Bonner.
