Brackettville pounds La Pryor

Published November 11, 2006

BRACKETTVILLE — The Brackettville Tigers took on the La Pryor Bulldogs for a spot in the playoffs Friday night at Bracketville Stadium.

Brackett dominated all quarters of play, allowing only one touchdown and racking up 44 points of its own.

The La Pryor Bulldogs began action, apparently for the wrong team however as three plays after the kickoff Gus Pargas, the La Pryor quarterback, tossed up an interception into the hands of Brackett's Travis Bonner.

Robert Davis, back at quarterback after a shoulder strain, kept the steam for his team handing off to Ivan Pinales and Bonner for nice gains in yardage.

A series of mishaps led to a fourth down situation, but a direct snap to Pinales off the punting formation proved an excellent play as Brackett not only racked up enough yards for a first down, but placed themselves in the red zone. Jacob Schroeder ran the ball in from two yards out to light up the scoreboard, but the extra point was blocked leaving Brackett ahead, 6-0.

The Tigers' kickoff fell out of bounds and put the Bulldogs at its own 20 yard line. La Pryor moved up the field quickly and looked good doing it, but a fumble on the handoff was recovered by the Tigers' Cesar DeLeon.

With possession once again it took but one play, a handoff to Pinales, for a score from 50 yards out on a wide left run. Bonner ran in the two-point conversion and put the Tigers up 14-0.

The Bulldogs' Sage Granado muffed the kickoff and put La Pryor in terrible field position. Terrible position led to bad plays and the ball found itself in the hands of Brackett with 27 seconds on the clock. Brackett ended the quarter with a Pinales run for five yards.

Davis kicked off action in the second quarter with a midfield touchdown run handoff to Schroeder. Schroeder put the ball between the goal posts and lifted the score to 21-0.

The kickoff flailed out of bounds again leaving the Bulldogs to start at its own 20. Fumbling on the handoff, though, Brackett recovered and had easy access to the endzone for yet another touchdown. The point after was blocked for a second time and the Tigers jacked up the lead to 27-0.

With 10 minutes of play left in the half, La Pryor was looking for scores anyway they could. Rushing to conserve time, blockers could not hit assignments and Tiger players broke through on all plays. Pinales snagged the Bulldogs' Mark Ramirez to end the drive.

After so much success it was difficult for the Tigers to move the ball for a first down. Four consecutive false start penalties on Brackett put them back to a third and 20 situation. An incomplete pass to Bonner forced the punt.

Gus Pargas of the Bulldogs received major help from Ramirez, using him to push markers down the field. A final quarterback draw with just over a minute left in the half came close to a turnover on downs, but the Bulldog players managed to push Pargas in at the last moment, gaining their first points. The point after slipped in and shortened the lead to 20 points. Brackett could make nothing of the final few seconds of action and ended the half in the lead.

Pinales opened the second half with a kickoff return putting the Tigers at their own 47 yard line. Davis switched up gameplay in the second half, handing off to Schroeder instead of Pinales. The new scheme worked wonders and saw a touchdown within three minutes. The extra point flew straight and strong and put Brackett up, 34-7.

After the kickoff, La Pryor attempted to progress the ball through a ground game. Joey Castillo of the Tigers kept them down with some impressive blindside tackles. A little help from Moises Gonzalez also put the Bulldogs back in the kennel. LaPryor wound up punting off with Davis returning the ball all the way to the opposing 29 yard line. Davis was knocked hard to the ground, and was a little shaky afterwards with a couple of fumbled snaps, but came to on a quarterback draw to place them at a first and goal situation on the two yard line. Bonner ran in a quick touchdown and, after he could not set the ball up for the extra point, a two-point conversion. The lead kept widening, now at 42-7.

The Bulldogs’ Ramirez broke the entire left side of Tigers' defense on the kickoff and appeared to be headed for an uncontested touchdown when after 45 yards he tripped on his own feet. The Tigers were able to put down La Pryor for four downs and gained possession on a turnover. Brackett could only get off a two-yard quarterback keeper before the end of the quarter.

Having such a substantial lead as they did, Brackett turned over action to their junior varsity team. Quarterbacking now was the backup varsity quarterback, Stevan Rivera. Eating up almost half the clock in the fourth quarter, Rivera kept his game on the ground. Albert Flores and Adam Pinales finished out the quarter at the running back positions. Isaac Talamantes also got a few runs in before the end of the game. Using all their downs, Brackett handed over possession to La Pryor on their own eight yard line.

Brackett, having their JV team on offense, kept their varsity squad out for defense. Playing smart they forced the Bulldogs to punt from their own seven yard line. An over-the-head snap, unreachable by the LaPryor quarterback, fell out-of-bounds and gave Brackett two final points. The score held at 44-7.

Regaining possession, Brackett drove the ball using their freshman team quarterback, Cody Clark. A final turnover with a little more than a minute left in the game occurred, but La Pryor only managed to move the ball 25 yards before the final whistle. Brackett kept the lead and took the game, 44-7.

"The kids came out and played. They came to play and put in four full quarters. The had a great game," said Tigers' Head Coach Greg Voyles. "They decided to step up and play."

The Brackettville Tigers move into the playoffs with the win and will face the winner of the Ben Bolt game to be held in two weeks.
